Candidates will have to appear in the respective engineering entrance exam for the college and course they wish to join. Many engineering colleges offer lateral entry to engineering diploma holders. Lateral entry means directly into the engineering program in the second year or B.Tech/B.E. can join in 3rd semester program. Many colleges conduct separate entrance exams to screen diploma holders for admission through the Lateral Entry Scheme.

2. AIME Certification

Another option for diploma holders from engineering background is to go for AIME certification course. The A.M.I.E (Associate Member of the Institutions of Engineers) certification is a specialized certification corresponding to the B.E. degree. Candidates who complete the AIME course are awarded the AIME Certificate by the Institute of Engineering, India. The AIME exam consists of two sections and the program takes approximately 4 years to complete. However, Polytechnic Diploma holders are not required to appear for some papers from Section A, i.e. Project Work. They can earn AIME certification in just 3 years.

3. Graduation in Study Domain

Apart from B.Tech and B.E. program, Polytechnic Diploma holders also have the option to join three years regular under-graduate course and graduate in their respective study domain. This option is particularly viable for diploma holders from non-engineering schemes who can pursue three-year regular undergraduate programs such as B.Sc, BA, BCA, and B.Com. However, candidates must have completed class 12 board exams or +2 certificates to be eligible for admission to these courses.
